Mickey’s Empire: A Tale of Power, Politics, and Perversion of Process

📅 Date: April 3, 2025
⏰ Doors Open: 11:30 AM | Presentation Begins: 12:00 PM
📍 Location: Great Hall, Allen Chapman Student Union
🍽 Lunch Provided

Join us for the Justice Dana Kuehn Inaugural Symposium on Justice and Law, featuring Donald J. Kochan, Professor of Law and Executive Director of the Law & Economics Center at Antonin Scalia Law School.

In Mickey’s Empire: A Tale of Power, Politics & Perversion of Process, Kochan will lead a lecture and fireside chat with UTulsa students on how institutional design, democratic accountability, and constitutional safeguards are meant to limit government power and prevent corporations—like Disney—from leveraging the state for private gain. The legislation that created “Mickey’s Empire” subverted these principles, raising critical questions about law, governance, and corporate influence.

Don’t miss this thought-provoking discussion on the intersection of law, democracy, and corporate power.

📌 Open to all—lunch will be provided!

Diversity Speaker Series feat. Chris Brecht, J.D.

The University of Tulsa’s College of Law Diversity Committee and Outlaws are proud to welcome Chris Brecht (J.D. ’09) and Michael Smith (J.D. ’91) to speak about their practice experience and work with the LGBTQ+ community.

Brecht has a wide variety of experience from his work in the Tulsa County Public Defender’s Office to his involvement in obtaining the first gender nonbinary birth certificate to be issued in the state of Oklahoma through the federal lawsuit Lorelied v. Frye.

Smith has concentrated on complex litigation, focusing on products liability, consumer protection class actions and multi-district litigation, malpractice, and insurance bad faith. In 2020, Michael was honored by the Family Law Section of the Oklahoma Bar Association for his work in Schnedler v. Lee, a groundbreaking case before the Oklahoma Supreme Court.

This is a College of Law event but is open to the UTulsa community at large. Pizza available to guests on a first-come, first-served basis.
