Battle of the Mascots

TU students join Oklahoma Center for Humanities for February First Friday Art Crawl to answer the age old question – which Tulsa mascot is the best? The mascots will meet at 101 Archer and participate in several competitions. This year’s contestants include: Hornsby, Slick, Goldie (Oilers Indoor Football), Snowplow Sam (Oilers Ice Rink), Oily (Oilers Baseball)  and TU’s very own Gus T.

The competition will be judged by FC Tulsa plays and members of the Roughneck Roller Derby and there will be a free photo opportunity with all the mascot after the competition.

This event is free to attend and open to all!

Musical Legacies of the Dust Bowl: Dust-to-Digital keynote

Join us for a talk with April and Lance Ledbetter, the owners of Dust-to-Digital, on the history of their work with music, music restoration and music mediums.

Directed by the husband-wife team in Atlanta, GA, Dust-to-Digital began its mission of creating access to hard-to-find music by producing high-quality books, box sets, CDs, DVDs and vinyl records in 1999.

This keynote is a part of the Musical Legacies of the Dust Bowl lecture series, with a chapter of panels following on Oct. 8. Following the keynote, the Zarrow Center will host the First Friday Art Crawl, with live music, food, drinks and a brand new exhibition focusing on music in the Oklahoma Dust Bowl.

The Oklahoma Center for the Humanities is excited to announce Musical Legacies of the Dust Bowl – a gallery exhibition and a series of public talks – that will feature experts discussing the impact of Oklahoma music on the American conscience since the 1930s.

These public talks will feature historians, authors, musicians and music producers discussing the factors that went into (and legacies that arose from) Oklahoma music.

“Food Instagram: Identity, Influence & Negotiation” book launch

The Oklahoma Center for the Humanities will host the launch of “Food Instagram: Identity, Influence & Negotiation” at the Zarrow Center.

Join us for an enlightening (and delicious!) evening with editors @zeniakish and @emilycontois as we wine and dine through the complications of food Instagram, aesthetics and tastes. Copies of the book will be available to purchase.

Admission is free and we’ll have some excellent catering and a cash bar. The First Friday art crawl will follow from 6 to 9 p.m. It’s gonna be sweet ~ 🍰

All-Black Towns of Oklahoma

In the early 1900s, there were as many as 50 all-black towns in Oklahoma. Black Oklahomans created spaces to offer safety, opportunity and freedom to their communities. Over the course of the century, the number and sizes of these towns shrank drastically. Only 13 of the original 50 exist today. Seeking to shed light on their foundations and their potential, this exhibition explores the contours of life in the All-Black Towns of Oklahoma.

This exhibition is free and open to the public. The Zarrow Center is open Wednesday-Saturday, 12-5 p.m.
