Transcendence on the Border: A Both/And Look at Three Novels by Contemporary Mexican and U.S. Writers
February 12, 5:30 pm-6:30 pm
FreeJoin Kendall College of Arts & Science for the first seminar leader talk of 2024. If you’re curious about the work that’s happening in Teachers Institute For Tulsa or you’re interested in learning about contemporary Mexican and U.S. writers, be sure to stop by. Bruce Dean Willis’ talk will discuss three novels that he incorporated in his TIFT seminar, “Hispanic History and ‘Alien’ Invasions.”
Willis is a TU professor of Spanish and comparative literature. He is a specialist in 20th- and 21st-century literature from the region, is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese, and has published more than 20 peer-reviewed articles and chapters in the field. His current research focuses on writers, singer-songwriters, and visual artists of Greater Mexico born between 1965 and 1975. These creators – including Yuri Herrera, Lila Downs, and Daniel Lezama – reintroduce and reinterpret Mesoamerican, Catholic, and modern Mexican iconography in ways that showcase changes in perception of identity, especially regarding Mexico’s complex relationship with the United States.
