The 2023 Katherine Anne Porter Prize for Fiction Awards Ceremony: A Virtual Reading with Carol Dines, Shobha Rao, and Dashka Slater

FreeTU community join Nimrod International Journal as they celebrate the outstanding winners of Nimrod’s 45th Katherine Anne Porter Prize for Fiction: the First Prize recipient, Carol Dines, and Second Prize winner, Dashka Slater!
Both of these remarkable writers will treat us to readings from their award-winning stories and engage in a fascinating conversation with our 2023 fiction judge, Shobha Rao. They’ll discuss the art of fiction, share invaluable insights for aspiring writers, unveil their future endeavors, and much more. The evening will culminate with a captivating fiction reading by Shobha Rao.

A brief introduction to our featured authors:
- Carol Dines: Carol’s recent collection of stories, titled “This Distance We Call Love,” earned her the Eric Hoffer Book Prize in 2022 and was a finalist in the National Indies Excellence Award for short fiction. Her short stories have graced the pages of prestigious literary journals such as Ploughshares, Nimrod, Colorado Review, Salamander, and Narrative Magazine. Carol resides and writes in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
- Shobha Rao: Our 2023 Katherine Anne Porter Prize for Fiction judge, Shobha Rao, immigrated to the United States from India at the age of seven. She is the author of the short story collection “An Unrestored Woman” and the novel “Girls Burn Brighter.” Notably, she was the recipient of Nimrod’s 2014 Katherine Anne Porter Prize in Fiction, and her winning story, “Kavitha and Mustafa,” was selected by T.C. Boyle for inclusion in “Best American Short Stories 2015.” Shobha currently serves as the Grace Paley Teaching Fellow at The New School in New York City.
- Dashka Slater: Dashka Slater is the proud winner of the 2023 Kurt Vonnegut Speculative Fiction Award and has also been honored with a Creative Writing Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. She is the author of numerous books, both fiction and nonfiction, catering to children and young adults. Her work includes the Stonewall Award-winning New York Times bestseller, “The 57 Bus.”
