Molly O’Brien is an Academy Award- and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker and head of documentary for NBC News Studios. As a director, O’Brien’s film “The Only Girl in the Orchestra” (Netflix, 2024) won the Oscar for best documentary short and the Documentary Critics Choice Award. O’Brien’s first documentary short, “A Pig With Hair,” featuring Wynton Marsalis, was shortlisted for the Academy Awards in 1999. Since then, she has directed numerous nonfiction projects. As a producer, O’Brien’s most recent feature docs include Errol Morris’ “Separated,” “Every Body” and “The Disappearance of Shere Hite.” In 2023, she was nominated for the prestigious Producers Guild Award for Outstanding Producer of a Documentary Motion Picture. In addition to her producing and directing work, O’Brien is a longtime advocate for the documentary filmmaking community. She founded the NBC News Studios’ Original Voices Fellowship and was the first producer of Sundance Institute’s Catalyst Initiative, which raised more than $20 million for independent filmmakers in its first two years. O’Brien enjoys teaching documentary filmmaking and was a professor of Wildlife & Environmental Filmmaking at Chapman University for two years. The daughter of renowned author and University of Tulsa Professor Darcy O’Brien, she currently lives in Brooklyn, New York.

UTulsa’s Presidential Lecture Series is sponsored by the Darcy O’Brien Endowed Chair and is supported by the Kendall College of Arts & Sciences and Office of the Provost.

Seats will be held for ticket holders until 7:15 p.m. After 7:15, all unclaimed seats will be released to general admission guests on a first-come, first-seated basis.
