Is Never Again … Again?

April 27, 2022, 12:00 pm-1:00 pm

Tali Nates

The Holocaust played a defining role in guiding our response to war crimes and crimes against humanity. The Nuremberg Trials sought to hold accountable Nazi officials and others deemed complicit in the atrocities, establishing the precedent of individual accountability for violations of humanitarian law. Subsequently, the international community established special tribunals for Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia before setting up the permanent International Criminal Court in 2002. Yet, as events in Syria, Afghanistan and Ukraine show, never again has instead been … again.

This thought-provoking conversation between Tali Nates and Roni Amit will discuss how far we have come since the Holocaust and ask what the international community can do in response to war crimes and crimes against humanity. What is the appropriate response to events currently unfolding in Ukraine from a humanitarian law perspective?

Tali Nates is the founder and executive director of the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre. Ms. Nates is a historian who lectures internationally on Holocaust education, genocide prevention, reconciliation and human rights.
