Honors Symposium: Steve Karian

March 11, 2024, 5:00 pm-7:00 pm

Free

Join the Honors College for one of our Spring Symposia! Dr. Steve Karian of WashU in St. Louis will lead us in a discussion on the poetry of Irish satirist Jonathan Swift, author of such works as “Gulliver’s Travels” and “A Modest Proposal.” For some of Swift’s poems, reactions have included shock and disgust, as well as delight and–some argue–a true humanity. They have spoken to readers over three centuries and remain popular selections in anthologies, in large part because they engage with and challenge still-dominant views about romantic love and beauty.

Poems will be distributed to registrants in advance for review before the symposium. Dress code is business/academic casual. Heavy hors d’oeuvres and libations will be provided.
