Boldly Go: Combining AI, Laboratory Experiments and Fieldwork to Explore Extreme Environments in Our Solar System

March 27, 1:00 pm-2:00 pm

Keplinger Hall 2040

Abstract

How do we take the next bold steps into the unknown to explore wild new places in space and make big new discoveries? In many cases, it would be too risky to send humans to these places – yet! Theiling and her team combine expertise in geology and chemistry with NASA spaceflight mission operations to develop an onboard AI that could act as an ‘advance science team’ – gathering information and learning about risky or challenging environments on-the-fly and making decisions autonomously to ensure that the science mission is achieved, even when the spacecraft can’t communicate with Earth. This AI could even become the first explorer that finds ways for humans to live on other planets and moons.

Speaker Bio

Bethany Theiling is a Research Scientist at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, leading the Adaptive Sensing Technology for Responsive Autonomy (ASTRA) AI team and co-leads the Goddard Instrument Field Team (GIFT) program. She was formerly a professor of geoscience at The University of Tulsa.
