Beyond “She Said”: Creating and Improving Dialogue in Fiction — Abigale Mazzo

A Virtual Fiction Craft Talk and Writing Workshop

Dialogue is a backbone of fiction, but it can be hard to get it right. This workshop will focus on creating and improving dialogue in short stories and novels. We’ll take a brief look at how to format dialogue appropriately and then dig in on ways to make your dialogue flow with the story, to sound realistic and natural, and to incorporate action into your dialogue tags to create depth. Attendees should bring a dialogue scene from a work-in-progress.

Abigale Mazzo is currently a Ph.D. student in English Language and Literature at The University of Tulsa and has an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Lindenwood University. Her work has appeared in The Gold Mine, The Oklahoma Review, Jelly Bucket, and 580 Monthly. She is from Oklahoma and loves to write about the Midwest and the people and traditions of the area. She is a member of the Nimrod Editorial Board.
