Family Workshops

Developed for children and their parents/caregivers, family workshops provide intergenerational activities. Each workshop includes the opportunity to explore the museum’s collection and special exhibitions followed by an art-making experience in the studio. Workshops are ideal for children ages 5-12.

Weekly project descriptions:

Week 1 (June 13 & 15): Felted Landscapes
Explore landscape paintings in the Gilcrease galleries and learn how artists like Thomas Moran and Albert Bierstadt impacted conservation efforts. Then get hands on and create your very own felted landscape with artist Allison Lackner by utilizing a wet felting method appropriate for people of all ages and abilities. This workshop is conducive to intergenerational learning and children must be accompanied by an adult caregiver. $7 per child/members; $12 per child/not-yet members.

Week 2 (June 20 & 22): Watercolor Postcards
Check out Hopi-Tewa artist Dan Namingha’s Pueblo Sunset painting in the galleries, then explore basic watercolor techniques with artist Christine Aria. You will learn how to break an image into basic shapes, look at warm and cool palettes, and explore the relationships between different colors as you create a postcard-sized abstract painting of a pueblo. This workshop is conducive to intergenerational learning and children must be accompanied by an adult caregiver. $7 per child/members; $12 per child/not-yet members.

Week 3 (June 27 & 29): Photo Tinting
Have you ever wondered how black and white photos were hand colored? Peruse film stills from our exhibition Exploring the Big Trail, learn about the origins of film and explore the process of photo tinting with artist Allison Lackner. Using oil paint, you will tint a black and white photo that you can take home. This is a great opportunity for collaboration between family members. Children must be accompanied by an adult caregiver. $7 per child/members; $12 per child/not-yet members.
